# Assisted living for couples with different care needs

One spouse needs help with nearly everything; the other mostly needs company. Moving together is possible, but the plan has to fit both people.

In short

Many assisted living communities let couples share an apartment, with each spouse assessed and charged for their own care level. When one spouse needs memory care or nursing, a campus offering several levels of care lets them live close by. Ask how each person's care is billed, and what happens if one spouse's needs outgrow the setting.

## Common arrangements

- **Shared apartment, separate care plans.** One rent, two care assessments. The healthier spouse may pay little or no care fee.
- **Neighboring units on one campus.** One spouse in assisted living, the other in memory care or skilled nursing in the same community. NIA notes some facilities are part of larger organizations that offer other levels of care.
- **Staying home with help.** Sometimes extra help at home works better for a couple, at least for a while.

## What to weigh

- Can the healthier spouse keep their independence and routines?
- Is the caregiving spouse already exhausted?
- What happens if one spouse dies or must move to a higher level?
- How will the total cost compare with care at home?

### Questions to ask a community

1. How do you price care for two residents in one apartment?
2. Do you assess each spouse separately?
3. If one of us needs memory care or nursing, where would that be?
4. Can couples share meals and activities across care levels?

## Questions families ask

### Can couples live together in assisted living?

Yes, many communities offer apartments for couples, with care billed per person.

### What if one spouse has dementia?

Some couples live together in assisted living for a time; others choose a campus where memory care is a short walk away. Ask how the community handles wandering and supervision.

### Do couples pay double?

Usually there is a second-person fee plus each person's care charges. Ask for the full breakdown.

### Does Medicare pay for either spouse?

Medicare doesn't pay for assisted living.
