In short

Florida is the national capital of senior living—more assisted living communities, more home care agencies, and more retirement destinations than any other state—but prices and quality vary dramatically by city. Assisted living statewide averages about $5,610 a month. Florida’s Medicaid long-term care program (SMMC LTC) can pay for care in a community or at home for those who qualify, and the Florida Elder Helpline (1-800-963-5337) offers free, county-by-county guidance to start the process.

## Florida’s senior care landscape

Florida has been the country’s top retirement destination for decades, and its senior care infrastructure reflects that. Assisted living communities, home care agencies, continuing-care campuses, and memory care units are more densely distributed here than in any other state. The market is mature, competitive, and in most places, families can choose from more options than they have time to tour.

That depth comes with two things to know. First, many of the people in care in Florida have adult children who live out of state—the communities here are accustomed to working with families by phone, email, and video call. Second, quality varies by community, not just by brand, and Florida publishes its own inspection data on FloridaHealthFinder.gov so you can look up any facility’s record yourself.

Season matters too. In the winter months (January through April), the population swells, some communities have waitlists, and home care rates can rise. Planning a placement outside season can mean more availability and lower costs.

**Hurricane season is real.** Every licensed assisted living facility and nursing home in Florida must have a written emergency plan and backup power. Ask any community you are considering for its plan and its last generator test date. A good community will answer clearly; a vague answer is a red flag.

## What care costs across Florida

These are Florida-wide medians from the 2025 CareScout Cost of Care Survey. Actual costs in your parent’s city can be higher or lower—especially on the Gulf Coast near the water, where prices can run 20–30% above the state median.

| Type of care | Florida median (2025) | National median (2025) |
|---|---|---|
| **Assisted living** | $5,610 a month | $6,200 a month |
| **Nursing home (semi-private)** | $10,342 a month | $9,581 a month |
| **Nursing home (private)** | $12,167 a month | $10,798 a month |
| **Home care (44 hrs/wk)** | $6,101 a month | $6,673 a month |
| **Adult day health care** | $1,625 a month | $2,058 a month |

Florida’s assisted living median is below the national average, but this is skewed inland: coastal cities like Naples, Sarasota, and St. Petersburg are above the state median, while inland and panhandle cities are lower. Nursing homes in Florida run above the national median, which reflects the concentration of frail, older residents.

## How Florida helps families pay

Florida has one of the larger state Medicaid programs for long-term care in the country, but it is administered through managed care plans and the application process can be confusing. Here is the essential picture.

### Florida programs that help seniors pay for care

Medicaid long-term care
Florida’s Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC) program pays for nursing home care and, for people who qualify, care in assisted living or at home through a managed care plan. There is often a waitlist for community care.

Who qualifies
Age 65 or older (or disabled), needs a nursing-facility level of care, and meets income and asset limits. Florida has an income cap of 300% of the SSI rate (about $2,982 a month in 2026). The asset limit for an individual is $2,000 in countable assets. If income is above the cap, a Qualified Income Trust can bring it under.

Optional State Supplementation
A small monthly state payment that helps very-low-income seniors cover the cost of an assisted living facility.

Veterans
VA Aid and Attendance pension for wartime veterans who need help with daily activities. Accredited representatives file for free, and Florida has multiple VA community clinics and the Bay Pines and Lake City VA systems.

Medicare
Does not pay for assisted living or long-term care. Covers short rehab stays after a hospital stay and some home health visits.

Where to start
Elder Helpline 1-800-963-5337 (free, statewide), or your local Area Agency on Aging. They will start the screening process.

Because Florida is an income-cap state, seniors with income above about $2,982 a month cannot qualify for Medicaid long-term care unless they set up a Qualified Income Trust. This is a specific legal step, not a general advice question—families should discuss it with a licensed elder law attorney. The Florida Bar Association offers referrals.

## Questions families ask

### How do I pick the right Florida city for my parent?

It depends on whether they already live there or you are moving them. If they are already in Florida, you are tied to their city’s options. If you are choosing a place to move them, consider the cost of living, proximity to hospitals, your travel convenience, and the kind of setting they prefer (coastal, urban, or quiet inland).

### How does Florida’s Medicaid long-term care program work?

Florida’s SMMC LTC program covers nursing home care and, for qualifying seniors, assisted living or home care through a managed care plan. It is for people who need a nursing-facility level of care and meet income ($2,982/month cap) and asset ($2,000) limits. Call the Elder Helpline 1-800-963-5337 to start the screening.

### Can I check a facility’s record online?

Yes. Florida publishes inspection reports, complaint histories, and licensing status for every assisted living facility and nursing home on FloridaHealthFinder.gov. We check this before recommending anywhere and will share what we find with you.

### Does Medicare pay for assisted living in Florida?

No. Medicare does not pay for assisted living or any other form of long-term custodial care. Medicare Part A covers short-term skilled nursing or rehab stays after a qualifying hospital stay (up to 100 days, with coinsurance after day 20). For long-term care, families either pay privately, qualify for Medicaid, or use veterans benefits.

### What is the first call I should make?

Call the Elder Helpline, 1-800-963-5337. It is a free, statewide service that routes you to your local Area Agency on Aging. They can start the Medicaid screening, connect you to caregiver support, and point you to local programs. Or call us—we do this all day, and we can help you figure out the first step.
