In short

Independent living in Sarasota covers a wide range: from 55+ apartment complexes with a community room to continuing-care campuses with dining venues, pools, and organized activities. It’s for people who need no daily assistance but are done with home maintenance and want neighbors.

## What it costs

| Type | Typical monthly cost | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| **55+ apartment (rental)** | $2,500 to $3,500 | Apartment, some activities, basic services |
| **Independent living community** | $3,000 to $4,800 | Apartment, meals, housekeeping, transportation |
| **Resort-style community** | $4,500 to $7,000 | Premium amenities, waterfront dining, fitness, golf |
| **CCRC (life plan)** | $2,000 to $5,000+ fee + monthly | Independent living with priority access to higher care |

## Questions families ask

### What’s the difference between a 55+ apartment and an independent living community?

A 55+ apartment is just an age-restricted rental building. An independent living community usually includes meals, housekeeping, social activities, and transportation. If your parent still drives and cooks, a 55+ apartment may be all they need.

### Do independent living communities offer any health care?

Not as part of the base package, though some have a nurse on staff for basic wellness checks. If your parent needs help with medications, bathing, or dressing, they need assisted living, not independent living.

### Can you move from independent to assisted living in the same community?

In communities that offer both levels of care, yes, though there is often a waitlist for assisted living units. In a CCRC, you get priority access. Ask about the priority policy before moving in.
