In short

Skilled nursing in Sarasota is used two ways: short-term rehab (Medicare may cover up to 100 days after a qualifying hospital stay) and long-term care. The key to getting skilled nursing right is knowing whether you’re paying through Medicare, Medicaid, or private funds, and qualifying beforehand.

## Two very different uses

Short-term rehab: after a hip replacement, stroke, or illness, your parent goes from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility for therapy and nursing care. Medicare Part A can cover the first 20 days in full, then a daily coinsurance for days 21-100. Most people are home well before day 100.

Long-term care: when a parent’s needs are medical and permanent, a nursing home becomes home. Medicare does not pay for this. It is usually paid by Medicaid for those who qualify, or by private funds until they do.

## Medicare and skilled nursing in Sarasota

For Medicare to cover short-term rehab, all of these must apply: your parent has Medicare Part A, had a qualifying inpatient hospital stay of at least three days, is admitted to a Medicare-certified facility within 30 days, and skilled nursing or therapy is medically necessary. The 2026 Part A deductible is $1,736; days 1-20 are $0; days 21-100 have a coinsurance of $217/day.

## Questions families ask

### How do I check a nursing home’s record in Sarasota?

Medicare’s Care Compare tool at medicare.gov/care-compare publishes star ratings, health inspection results, staffing data, and quality measures for every certified facility. Florida also publishes inspection reports on FloridaHealthFinder.gov.

### What’s the difference between a nursing home and assisted living?

Medical care. A nursing home has licensed nurses around the clock; assisted living has 24-hour non-medical staff. If your parent needs a nurse rather than a helper, it’s skilled nursing.

### Does Medicare pay for long-term nursing care?

No. Medicare only covers short-term skilled nursing or rehab after a qualifying hospital stay, up to 100 days. For long-term care, families pay privately or qualify for Medicaid.
