## The kinds of homes Kansas licenses

Kansas groups most care settings under one label: the adult care home. The KDADS Facilities Directory lets you search each type separately:

- **Assisted living facilities** and **residential health care facilities**
- ** Home plus:** small homes with a few residents
- **Boarding care homes**
- ** Nursing facilities**, including hospital long-term care units
- **Adult day care**

Knowing the license type matters. It tells you what level of care the home is allowed to provide, so you can match it to what your parent needs.

## How to look up a home's inspection results

1. **Open the KDADS Facilities Directory** Pick the directory for the type of home, or search all of them.
2. **Find the home by name, city or county** The listing shows the license type, the administrator and the phone number.
3. **Open "Inspection Results and Facility Details"** This is where the state's survey findings are posted.
4. **Check the last survey posting date** A recent date means the record is current. An old one is worth asking the home about.
5. **For nursing homes, check Care Compare too** Medicare's Care Compare rates nursing homes that take Medicare or Medicaid, with inspection, staffing and quality measures.

### Before you visit a Kansas adult care home

1. Confirm the license type matches the care your parent needs
2. Read the most recent inspection results on the KDADS directory
3. Note any finding you don't understand and ask the administrator to explain it
4. For a nursing facility, compare its Care Compare ratings with two others nearby
5. Ask how the home handles a resident whose needs increase
6. Write down the name of the person who answered your questions

## If something worries you

- **KDADS complaint hotline:** 800-842-0078, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It takes reports of abuse, neglect, exploitation or poor care in adult care homes and in home health agencies licensed by KDADS.
- **Kansas Long-Term Care Ombudsman:** toll-free 1-877-662-8362. Ombudsmen are advocates for residents of long-term care homes and can help with a concern before or after a move.
- **Emergency:** if someone is in danger right now, call 911.
