In short

Before moving a parent in, compare their care needs today and in a year with what your household can give: who is home during the day, whether the home is safe and accessible, how costs will be shared, and what backup help you can call. Agree on privacy and roles in advance, and plan for respite.

Questions families ask

Is it a good idea to move a parent in?

It can be, if needs fit what your home and family can give.

What should we agree on first?

Money, roles, privacy and what happens if needs grow.

Can we get paid help at home?

Yes. Aides can come for a few hours, and adult day programs give daytime care.

What if it doesn't work out?

Agree in advance on signs that it's time to look at other options.
